How to change the thermostat in a Ford Explorer - If you’re driving the popular Ford Explorer, and you have an overheating problem, or you find that the heater is not blowing hot air, you probably need to change the thermostat. In under an hour you will have to solve the problem and its Explorer once again be operating at peak performance.
Things You’ll Need
10mm wrench or
Thermostat and gasket
- Drain the coolant from the Explorer into a suitable container by opening the drain plug in the bottom of the radiator. Save the coolant for reuse if it is relatively new and clean.
- Remove the negative cable from the battery if the Explorer has an engine of 2.9, 3.0, 4.0 or 5.0 liters. This step is not necessary that the 2.3 and 2.5 liter engines.
- Follow the upper radiator hose to the front driver side of the intake manifold, where the motor. This is where the thermostat housing on your Ford Explorer is located. If necessary, remove the air through the filter to facilitate access to the housing.
- Release the clip on the end of the radiator hose and pull the hose from the thermostat housing. Use a 10mm wrench or socket to remove the two screws at the top of the thermostat housing. Remove the cover.
- Note the position of the thermostat before removal. Remove the old thermostat. Seat the new thermostat inside the home in the same position as the previous spring-side facing the engine. Install a new gasket on the thermostat.
- Replace the cover of the thermostat housing and radiator hose. Re-install the air cleaner duct if withdrawn earlier. Fill radiator with coolant reserve or new. Start your browser and run with the heater blowing until the engine warms up. Check for leaks.
Tips and Warnings
Do not try to remove the fluid from your Explorer if the engine is hot. Make sure the engine is cool before draining the coolant.

- Remove the radiator cap. Place a large drain pan under the passenger side of the radiator in the front of the Escape. Open drain plug at the bottom of the radiator with a wrench. Drain coolant so that it is below the upper radiator hose. Tighten the radiator drain plug.
- Trace upper radiator hose to the hose connection five positions. Remove the screws securing the connector with a wrench. Remove the thermostat housing connector. Pull the O-ring and thermostat housing.
- Insert the new thermostat in the box and the position of the O-ring. Connecting the connector box five positions. Seal the connector with screws. Tighten bolts with a wrench.
- Add a 50-50 mix of coolant and water to the radiator until the level is full. Replace the radiator cap. Start the engine and see the hose connections for leaks. Tighten the hose, if necessary.
